Interactive audio-video installation

There is no precise or day-to-day report of the number and names of people who were murdered, raped, tortured, trafficked, displaced, or disappeared in the genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are no precise numbers for the quantity of extracted minerals, economic gain, or enslavement from the illegal mines that cover 60%-80% of the world’s supply of cobalt and coltan. There is round-off underestimation, forecast, extrapolation, incomplete censuses… difficult reports and studies, and countless individual stories and testimonies. One regular source of accurate data from the region is the weather. The weather is also a primary topic of discussion in everyday small talk in the West. If we can’t talk about the genocide, maybe we can discuss the weather under which it is happening. Nothing 01 is a real-time audiovisual composition animated by weather data from the past, the present, and the future, sourced from a weather station in Goma, the capital of the North Kivu Province in the DR Congo. It explores the disembodiment and re-embodiment of data and the spectral presence of its source through noise. A wide projection of an unpredictable form shifts from fabric to smoke to sediment on an evolving background and sound. The form is driven by the contrast and relatedness between noise and data, by how one can organize or disorganize the other.
