After so many separations, disappearances, and relocations, what remains?
“askant 33 is a three-part series that refers to the end of long-standing
family presences, personal events, and medical habits
that had major importance in my life. In (part 1), I’m trying to live with the recent disappearance of three matriarchs in my family, in DR Congo.”
aksanti 33 (part 1) is a performative experimentation. It settles into the material and immaterial instability of lineage after the loss of three matriarchs (my grandmothers and my aunt) in DR Congo, in a short amount of time. It sets space and time for instant actions motivated by the attempt to maintain familial and cultural ties. Doubt is confirmed in every moment, gesture and space, revealing the unspeakable threat of losing ancestral identity. After so many separations, disappearances, and relocations, what does remain? Can effort and pain create a temporal loop that will prevent the future from forgetting and not knowing? This performance tests an uncertain legitimacy, threatened by shame and fear of failure, at a crucial age.
